NACOE Veteran Student Guide to Preparing JST Credit Review Materials  

Veteran students have two avenues to pursue evaluation of JST credits. 

 JST credits

1- Evaluation of JST for CORE Credits 

The Core Equivalency Review Committee (CERC) considers appeals and/or petitions from students seeking waivers or substitutions of established core course requirements. These appeals are organized with the support of your academic department advisor. 

Please follow these steps to submit a CERC appeal 

       a. Meet with NACOE JST Specialist to review your JST and discuss potential CORE equivalencies 

               i. Please connect with Katie Gahagan for JST CORE discussion. She can be reached

                  by scheduling an appointment through NavMSU or emailing katie.gahagan@montana.edu

       b. Complete and Print Official CERC Request Form 

               i. Complete student portion of Official CERC Request Form. 

       c. Prepare official letter specifying the CORE course(s) or requirements in question. 

               i. Official letter specifying the Core course(s) or requirements in question 

                           1. Core course(s) or requirements in question. 

                           2. Rational for substitution or waiver. This should include a combination of what you learned in the  

                                military via JST courses as well as your experience.  

                           3. Evidence or support for substitution or waiver request 

                                   a. This usually includes JST course booklet or some type of documentation that demonstrates   

                                       learning outcome alignment. 

           d. Meet with NACOE JST Specialist (Katie Gahagan) for review and signature.  

           e.Meet with NACOE Assistant Dean , Jennifer Clark, for review and NACOE Dean’s Office signature. 

           f. Submit completed appeal to the Office of the Registrar. 

2-  Evaluation of JST for Major Specific Coursework 

Some Veteran Students join NACOE with engineering related experience from their position in the Military. If you have JST credits that you believe relate to your major, you will need to receive approval from your NACOE Department Head.  

Please follow these steps to request that JST coursework be applied to your major. 

           a. Meet with your Department Academic Advisor 

                    i. Contact information will be provided in your online Orientation Pathway 

                   ii. Let your Academic Advisor know that you have taken JST courses that you believe are related to your   

                       major. 

           b. Prepare documentation for the Department Head 

                   i. Please gather documentation, such as a course booklet or evidence of projects completed.  

           c. Meet with your NACOE Department Head 

                   i. Your academic advisor will provide you contact information to meet with the  

                       Department Head.

                   ii. Please bring the documentation you prepared to your meeting. 

            d. If approved, your Department will manually build the JST course into your Degreeworks.
