The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes excellence in teaching as demonstrated through application of new and innovative teaching methods and engagement of students in scholarship. The award consists of a $500 honorarium and is announced at the College’s Annual Awards Ceremony luncheon held in April. Anyone may nominate an individual for this award; an individual may not nominate himself/herself.   

Criteria

The Award is open to any individual engaged in teaching (including NTT faculty and instructors).  One award will be given to a TT faculty member and one award will be given to a NTT faculty member.  The nomination should be grounded on an extraordinary record of teaching and related scholarly excellence. 

Examples of teaching activities for consideration include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Impact on Students
    • Evidence of lecture or laboratory/recitation activities that promote inquiry and synthesis of information.
    • Evidence of a rapport with students that engages them in the learning process.
    • Evidence of successful advising (academic and career).
    • Student evaluations (letters or standardized instruments).
  • Impact on Engineering Education
    • Peer evaluations of teaching excellence/creativity.
    • Scholarship relative to pedagogy (established through publications of books, invited lectures, grantsmanship, and/or publication in teaching related journals).
    •  
    • Service to profession of engineering education.
  • Overall Impact as an Educator.

Nomination Requirements

The nominations should consist of the following materials:     

  • Nomination letter that includes a brief summary (limited to two pages) describing the accomplishments of the nominee relative to the criteria above.
  • One letter of support from any appropriate source (limited to two pages).
  • Current Vita (limited to five pages).

If nominations exceed the page limit noted, the Chair will remove the nomination from consideration.

The recipient will be selected by a committee chosen by the College’s Faculty Development Advisory Committee.
